Sonnenerde ist Österreichs führendes Unternehmen im Bereich Pflanzenkohleproduktion und Produktentwicklung aus Pflanzenkohle. Neben verschiedenen hochfruchtbaren Schwarzerden wurde auch das Stadtbaum Feinsubstrat (für das Stockholmer Baumpflanzsystem), die Bio Güllekohle und verschiedene Futterkohlen entwickelt.
Biochar is one of the few recognized options for extracting CO2 from the air and using it beneficially in the form of products. In order to achieve the climate targets, such binding technologies are absolutely essential and must be implemented as quickly as possible.
Due to the great demand, the next milestone is being set at Sonnenerde and a completely new, industrial biochar production plant has been built. New standards were also set during construction: biochar concrete was used for the first time on an industrial scale and, in conjunction with the timber construction method, the CO2 footprint was massively reduced. The new plant is a completely new concept, which should reduce production costs in the long term and make biochar products more affordable for the end user - so nothing stands in the way of more widespread use. The following ideas have been implemented here for the first time:
- The raw material will be compost screenings (i.e. exclusively biomass residues)
- The heat will be used several times, including for a sludge drying plant
- The emission of pollutants is impossible with this concept
- The system will be fully automated and run continuously (8,000 hours/year)
- 800 kWp PV system
- Production capacity of biochar: up to 3,000 tons/year
- CO2 sequestration: up to 9,000 tons/year
